TURN OF THE CENTURY WOODWORKING

Here we have a Deco Bar made for a client in Des Plaines IL. Dimensions: 132"W, 72"D, Bar top 42"H, Overall 82"H.

The bar is made of solid Oak and Oak veneer ply. The bar top has Jewel Mahogany Pionite laminate on the surface and is wrapped with a solid 5/4" Oak armrest set at a 70 degree angle. Instead of having the corners wrap around evenly, I elected to have them drop at the same 70 degree angle to give them a unique look. I thought they would go well with the radius of the back lit acrylic rod lighting fixtures. I determined a suitable radius for the corners and drilled a series of 3/4" holes at that radius to accept the rods. Drop ceiling diffuser panels were cut to size and inserted on the back side of the rods which gave them a unique look when lit from the back side with florescent lights.

The front panel has Java Mahogany Pionite laminate applied to 3/4" stock sheet good which is then attached to the base units of the front bar from the inside of the units. I stair stepped 3/4", 1/2" and 5/16" solid Oak with radius ends to the panel starting 7" from the bottom of the panel. I determined that to be a good height for the foot rest attached to the very bottom of the panel. A solid Quartered Oak unstained circle was attached at the center point of the 5/16" Oak. From each point where the Oak boards and circle meet, I routed a 1/4" groove to the uppermost corner on each side of the panel and applied 5/16" unfinished dowel rods. This made the laminate on the panel stand out and gives a sense of depth to the entire panel.

The units for the back bar have the same acrylic rod and radius as the front bar with glass shelving and an outside full length radius in which 1/8" Oak ply was applied to a radius frame work.

A center support was installed for the support of the glass shelves.

An antique coat hanger was purchased at an antique store to be used as a bar towel holder. A small winerack was built into the backside of the bar front.

I determined that this red acrylic barsink was a good fit for the bar.
